Detained Ex-Attorney General Malami Accuses EFCC of Blocking Bail Process

Malami, who is currently in detention, made the allegation through his media aide, Muhammed Bello Doka, in a statement issued on Sunday.

According to the statement, the EFCC’s claim that Malami had failed to secure his bail due to non-compliance with the stipulated conditions was misleading and inaccurate.

Doka alleged that the bail conditions imposed by the anti-graft agency were intentionally designed to prolong Malami’s detention, adding that the commission was using the excuse of unmet conditions to justify keeping him in custody.

“From the onset, Malami was ready and willing to comply with his bail conditions,” the statement said. “However, the EFCC denied him the opportunity to perfect the bail, while simultaneously portraying him as someone who refused bail.”

The aide further dismissed allegations that Malami attempted to evade investigations, insisting that the former attorney general is a law-abiding citizen who has never obstructed or avoided any probe.

He urged the EFCC to review the bail conditions and present requirements that are realistic and attainable, while calling on the commission to desist from using the media to suggest that Malami had deliberately refused bail.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not responded to the claims.
