The emergency session, held via Zoom, brought together regional leaders in a swift diplomatic response to the unfolding crisis in the coup-hit nation.

Guinea-Bissau’s military, which seized power after arresting President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, has announced General Horta Nta Na Man as head of a one-year transitional government. Soldiers have since taken control of key institutions in the capital, Bissau.

A photograph released by the State House Media Department showed President Tinubu participating in the high-level discussions from Abuja.

Tinubu previously served two consecutive terms as ECOWAS Chairman before handing over to Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio in June 2025.

The bloc has been under pressure in recent years as West Africa faces a resurgence of military takeovers. Thursday’s emergency summit underscored ECOWAS’ determination to halt further regional destabilisation.
