INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, made this known at the 2025 Digital Nigeria International Conference and Exhibitions in Abuja. Represented by National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu, he stated that despite significant progress achieved with the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), the country’s uneven network coverage continues to impede seamless transmission of polling-unit results to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

“A tool like the BVAS is only as good as the network it runs on,” Amupitan said, noting that the commission is in ongoing discussions with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and telecom service providers to address the challenge.

He added that INEC is also exploring alternative technologies to strengthen real-time result transmission nationwide.

The INEC Chairman maintained that the deployment of BVAS has eliminated identity theft and multiple voting in Nigeria’s electoral system. Addressing an audience of tech innovators, policymakers, and civil society representatives, he described BVAS as a major turning point in Nigeria’s democracy.

“The BVAS device has become our frontline defence against identity fraud, ensuring that only the rightful, eligible voter can be accredited at the polling unit. With the biometric safeguards now in place, voter impersonation has been effectively eliminated from our electoral system,” he said.
