The announcement came through a letter dated 14 November 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Nassarawa Ward 1, Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State. Copies were also sent to the state and national PDP leadership and the Board of Trustees.

Mohammed, who recently turned 80, said the decision followed “deep reflection” and a desire to make room for a new generation of leaders to shape Nigeria’s political future. “It has been a rare privilege to serve our nation and our party in various capacities,” he wrote. “From my early days in public service to my tenures as Minister of Communications and Minister of Defence, to my service as Acting National Chairman and later Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, I have always sought to contribute to unity, progress and democratic consolidation.”

Over the years, Mohammed played strategic roles in national administration, security reforms, and party restructuring during the Fourth Republic. His leadership and experience were widely regarded as pivotal in shaping the PDP during its dominant years in power.

Reflecting on his career, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country, thanked colleagues and supporters, and pledged to continue contributing to national unity and good governance as an elder statesman.

Political observers note that Mohammed’s exit is likely to impact PDP operations in Kebbi State, where he has been a senior adviser, mobiliser, and key stakeholder, particularly as the party works to strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
