In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Mr. Fred Itua, the government said several official items, including vehicles, documents, and other state-owned assets assigned to Omobayo during his brief tenure, were yet to be surrendered despite repeated reminders.

Omobayo was sworn in on April 8, 2024, by Chief Judge Daniel Okungbowa after being nominated by former Governor Godwin Obaseki, following Obaseki’s fallout with then-deputy governor Philip Shaibu. Shaibu was later reinstated by the court, rendering Omobayo’s tenure illegitimate.

“The continued retention of such property constitutes a clear breach of public trust and unlawful possession of state assets,” the statement read.

The government warned that failure to comply within seven days would result in Omobayo’s arrest and recovery of the assets through lawful means.

“The Edo State Government remains committed to accountability, due process, and the protection of public property,” Itua added. “No individual, regardless of position or political affiliation, will be allowed to unlawfully retain assets belonging to the people of Edo State.”

Governor Okpebholo’s administration reiterated its commitment to transparency, discipline, and integrity in public service and urged Omobayo to respect the directive to avoid further embarrassment.
