In a statement issued on Monday after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Abuja, ASUU accused the government of neglecting public universities and ignoring the welfare of lecturers despite repeated protests.

The statement, signed by ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, said the union has run out of patience.

“If after the 14-day ultimatum there is no concrete response, we shall commence with a two-week warning strike. This may then progress into a total and indefinite shutdown of public universities nationwide,” the union declared.

List of Demands

ASUU’s demands include:

  1. Renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.
  2. Sustainable funding and revitalisation of public universities.
  3. End to the victimisation of ASUU members at Lagos State University (LASU), Prince Abubakar Audu University (Kogi), and Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).
  4. Payment of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears.
  5. Resolution of delayed promotion arrears spanning over four years.
  6. Settlement of outstanding third-party deductions.

ASUU’s Frustration

The union lamented that despite protests and appeals to the government in recent months, authorities have not offered any tangible response to their pressing demands.

ASUU said the neglect of public universities is undermining education in Nigeria and worsening the working conditions of lecturers.

The Federal Government is yet to respond officially to ASUU’s fresh ultimatum.
