Dino Melaye, the former Senator for Kogi West, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to provide credible leadership and effective governance for Nigerians.

In a resignation letter posted on his official X account on July 4, 2025, and addressed to Aiyetoro Gbede, the PDP chairman in Ward 1, Ijumu Local Government Area, Melaye declared his immediate withdrawal from all party activities.

“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement. This decision is necessary due to the party’s lack of potency and capacity to free the Nigerian people from the political challenges afflicting our nation,” the letter stated.

Melaye, who was the PDP’s candidate in the 2023 Kogi State governorship election, stated that his decision was made after careful consideration of the party’s current condition and future direction.

“In light of my careful reflection on the party’s condition, I can no longer, in good conscience, participate in its activities or support its agenda,” the letter stated.

Melaye also requested that his resignation be regarded as a formal and complete withdrawal from all levels and structures of the party.

“Therefore, please consider this my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at every level, effective immediately,” the letter stated.

In closing, Melaye expressed appreciation for the chance to serve under the party’s banner during his membership. “Thank you for the opportunity to serve during my time with the party,” he concluded.

His departure highlights ongoing issues within the party and may reflect broader discontent among its members.
