The video, which circulated widely online, shows a man attempting to bypass fuel queues by placing an order for petrol via WhatsApp. Shortly after, a rider arrives with a mini fuel dispenser mounted on his motorcycle and fills the customer’s vehicle.
The clip claimed the initiative—branded as “FuelUp”—was powered by “Dangote Petroleum.” While some Nigerians praised the idea, others expressed safety concerns, with some observers noting that the footage may have been AI-generated.
When contacted, Dangote’s Group Chief Communication Officer, Anthony Chiejina, dismissed the content as fake. “Fake! We are not in any way associated with this,” he said.
Another senior official explained that the refinery distributes fuel solely to bulk buyers and has not entered any agreement to sell fuel through dispatch riders.
The clarification comes months after the refinery imported hundreds of Compressed Natural Gas-powered trucks as part of its direct fuel distribution scheme launched in September.
The refinery has also begun implementing plans to scale up operations from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, strengthening its position as one of the world’s largest integrated refining complexes. Located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos, the facility has recently adopted advanced technologies, including cleaner energy systems, automation tools, and improved logistics infrastructure designed to enhance efficiency and meet environmental standards.
The planned expansion is expected to double output, boost domestic fuel availability, and position Dangote as a major contributor to Africa’s energy supply chain.
