Governor Diri had on Wednesday announced his resignation from the PDP, citing what he described as “very obvious reasons.” He revealed that members of his cabinet and the state house of assembly had also left the party with him.

In a press conference held at the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) secretariat in Yenagoa, the chairmen confirmed their decision to follow the governor’s lead.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Lelei Tariye Isaac, chairman of Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA, said their resignation was a result of the deepening internal crisis within the PDP.

“We are indeed grateful for the opportunity to serve the people for the past one and a half years,” Isaac said. “We were elected on the platform of the PDP, but now that our leader, Governor Douye Diri, has resigned, we also stand with him and formally withdraw our membership from the PDP.”

Other chairmen present at the briefing included David Alagoa (Nembe LGA), Target Isaiah Segibo (Southern Ijaw LGA), Bulodisiye Ndiwari (Yenagoa LGA), Isaac Onniye (Ekeremor LGA), and Golden Jeremiah (Ogbia LGA).

However, Alice Allen Tangi (Sagbama LGA) and Lucky Febo (Brass LGA) were absent from the meeting.

Bayelsa State has eight local government areas, six of which have now aligned with Governor Diri in his political move.
