In a statement released on Wednesday, the US Embassy in Nigeria explained that the funding will provide urgent food support and nutrition aid to internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the North-East and North-West.

The embassy emphasised that the support is aimed at saving lives and easing hardship among Nigeria’s most vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.

“With this contribution, WFP Nigeria will provide food and nutrition assistance to 764,205 beneficiariesacross conflict-hit areas. This includes complementary nutrition top-ups for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, and 43,235 children through electronic food vouchers,” the statement read.

This development comes just weeks after the US unveiled a $93 million emergency food package to tackle hunger and malnutrition across 13 nations, including Nigeria. The programme is expected to provide life-saving therapeutic food for nearly one million children battling severe malnutrition.

The countries listed as beneficiaries include Haiti, Mali, Niger, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Nigeria, Madagascar, Central African Republic, DR Congo, Djibouti, Kenya, and Chad.

Speaking at a press briefing, a senior US State Department official stressed that the aid package would cover essential food commodities, nutrition support, and emergency logistics to reach those in need quickly.

This latest intervention underscores Washington’s continued role in supporting humanitarian needs in Nigeria, especially at a time when rising insecurity and economic hardship have worsened the food crisis.
