President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 17th BRICS Summit, following an official invitation from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Nigeria’s participation in this year’s summit marks a notable diplomatic milestone, as the country attends under the newly designated status of partner country—a step above the traditional guest designation it held in previous engagements. While not yet a full member, the partner status reflects a growing recognition of Nigeria’s strategic role in global economic and political discourse.

Currently, three African nations—South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia—are full members of the BRICS bloc, which brings together major emerging economies to foster cooperation on global development, trade, and governance.

President Tinubu’s presence at the summit signals Nigeria’s aspiration to strengthen multilateral ties and increase its influence in global decision-making arenas.
